Located on the outskirts of a small Essex village, the site was previously utilised as a gravel quarry. Surrounded by dense woodland and dramatic topography, the design capitalises upon the orientation and natural bowl created by the previous gravel workings. The public rooms are located in the upper level within the tree canopies, having an intimate relationship with landscape. The lower levels provide sleeping and snug accommodation. The house is designed to be highly sustainable encompassing very high levels of insulation, energy harnessed from ground source heat pump technology in addition to many other sustainable ideas.
